Former U.S. President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama are stepping into a new creative chapter together—this time on the Broadway stage.
The couple announced they will help produce a revival of the Pulitzer Prize–winning play Proof, marking the first Broadway project for their media company, Higher Ground Productions. Known for its success in film, television, and podcasting, the company’s expansion into live theater signals a notable shift in its storytelling ambitions.
In a statement released Wednesday, the Obamas expressed enthusiasm about the project, calling it “an extraordinary privilege” to bring the acclaimed play back to Broadway. They emphasized that Proof reflects the kind of storytelling their company was built to support—narratives that explore “brilliance, doubt, and what we inherit from the people we love.”
Originally written by David Auburn, Proof tells the story of Catherine, the daughter of a brilliant but troubled mathematician. After his death, she discovers a notebook that may contain groundbreaking work, raising questions about authorship, trust, and the fine line between genius and instability.
The revival is set for a limited 16-week run beginning in April and will be directed by Tony Award winner Thomas Kail, who also joins the production team alongside Mike Bosner and the Obamas.
First premiered Off-Broadway in 2000, Proof quickly transferred to Broadway, where it earned widespread acclaim, including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play.
